Bridging Worlds: Tom Monroe of U-GO Foundation’s Journey with SEGA Graduates in Tanzania
U-GO has a bold vision: to create a world where thousands of young women in low-income countries can pursue university education, leading to increased earnings and improved lives for themselves, their families, and their communities. Its mission is to empower ambitious and promising young women by providing financial scholarships, funded by individuals and companies in high-income countries, to support their tertiary education.
At its core, U-GO is powered by the expertise of leaders who were instrumental in Room to Read's early days, including two of its three co-founders. These visionary leaders bring a shared commitment to tenacity, a results-driven approach, and a fast-moving entrepreneurial spirit, ensuring U-GO’s impactful support for young women.
U-GO is supporting 147 SEGA graduates with higher education and university scholarships, opening doors to previously unattainable opportunities. We are proud to be U-GO’s first and only African partner, solidifying a unique and transformative collaboration to empower young women in our region.
In October 2024, Tom Monroe, U-GO’s Director of Programs, visited SEGA, a key partner organization in Tanzania. Mr. Monroe’s visit focused on connecting with SEGA graduates and exploring opportunities for higher education. While in Tanzania, he visited students at various universities in Dar es Salaam and Morogoro. Additionally, he conducted a home visit with one of SEGA’s graduates, gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges and successes experienced by these young women as they pursue their academic dreams. His visit underscored U-GO’s commitment to fostering educational opportunities and supporting the next generation of leaders.
When Tom boarded his flight to Tanzania, he knew he was embarking on an adventure that would open his eyes to a new culture. He didn’t anticipate its profound impact on his perspective and heart. His journey was not just about exploring a different part of the world; it was about connecting with people whose resilience and optimism embody the spirit of SEGA’s mission to empower young women.
Meeting SEGA Graduates: A Testament to Transformation
One of the most inspiring parts of Tom’s visit was meeting SEGA graduates, young women who had overcome significant challenges to rewrite their futures. These graduates are living proof of what access to quality education and unwavering support can achieve. They shared their journeys filled with determination, growth, and newfound opportunities.
Their confidence and ambition especially struck Tom. "Meeting these young women was like seeing potential come alive," he said. "They radiate a sense of purpose and drive that is truly inspiring." Many of these graduates are now pursuing careers, starting businesses, or contributing meaningfully to their communities. They’ve become role models for younger girls in their villages and anyone who believes in the transformative power of education.
Home Visits: Understanding the Roots
Tom also had the opportunity to visit the homes of current SEGA students. These visits were both eye-opening and humbling. He saw firsthand the challenges many families face, from limited resources to lack of access to essential services. Yet, amidst these challenges, he witnessed an unshakable sense of hope and pride.
Parents and guardians expressed gratitude for SEGA, emphasizing that the school had given their daughters opportunities they could never have imagined. It was clear that SEGA’s impact extended far beyond the classroom, touching entire families and communities.
Reflecting on his experience, Tom noted how much he had learned about resilience, gratitude, and the importance of investing in education. "These girls have taught me more about perseverance and hope than I could have imagined," he said. "Their stories remind me why education is the most powerful tool for change." He came away inspired to share SEGA’s story and to support its mission of empowering young women to break the cycle of poverty and create a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
Tom’s journey powerfully reminds us of the impact we can have when we support organizations like SEGA. Whether volunteering, donating or simply sharing their stories, we all can make a difference.
Tom said, “This experience has changed me in ways I’m still discovering. SEGA isn’t just educating girls; it’s transforming lives, families, and communities. It’s a ripple effect of hope and possibility that the world desperately needs.”
If Tom’s journey inspires you, consider supporting our mission today. Together, we can help more girls in Tanzania achieve their dreams and build a brighter future.
