Nurturing Minds Executive Director Shares insights on resource mobilization with Amplify Partners
Amplify is a collective of community-driven organizations collaborating to create a community-based alternative to traditional development scale. Amplify partners collaborate to share best practices, develop community driven metrics and create large scale joint advocacy campaigns in order to elevate the unparalleled impact that community-driven organizations have in transforming the lives of adolescent girls.
Nurturing Minds (NM) is a founding member of Amplify and was asked to share with partners how NM and SEGA operate, how we got started 13 years ago and what we did then and now to raise funds to support our programs in Tanzania. As the Executive Director of NM one of my most important roles is to ensure we have the resources to run SEGA’s three programs: The SEGA Girls’ School, the Modern Girl Community Outreach Program and the Career Development and Continuing Education Scholarship Fund for SEGA graduates.
At NM we emphasize having diverse sources of funding for sustainability. This means that our funds come from many different sources including our board of directors, individuals, foundations, corporations, school groups, churches and events. I was asked what our biggest asset is and by far for NM it is our fantastic board of directors who not only give financially to support quality education, leadership and entrepreneurship for vulnerable adolescent girls but give generously of their time and expertise and without exception are 100% mission driven. They LOVE NM and SEGA and are completely dedicated to our success. I also shared some tips about writing a year-end annual appeal and shared some insights about what to do if you do not have a strong network. Sharing your mission, vision and most importantly your passion I believe is what is most important to successfully bringing together supporters that will walk side by side with you to help you meet your mission and create the impact you hope to see.
Amplify’s mission is to amplify the voices, work and collaborative impact of local organizations focused on the power and potential of adolescent girls. The Amplify network does this by strengthening organizational efficiencies, creating opportunities for collaborative learning like this “Resource Mobilization” session, and building evidence through research while engaging in global policy and practice fora.
NM and SEGA are proud to be a part of this wonderful network. We have learned so much from other community partners and we are always happy to share our experiences and expertise as well. We all have a shared vision for a better world for adolescent girls in East Africa and we believe coming together to share our knowledge will uplift all of us and make us better capable of positively impacting the lives of East African girls.
