Rhona Mtega Brings Joy to Communications
SEGA’s students work hard for excellent grades. They know they can only complete and graduate high school if they do well. But, what gives them almost as much (if not more) joy than getting good grades? Seeing Rhona Deusdery Mtega with letters for them from their sponsors!
The students cherish the special moments they receive personal letters from their “overseas friends,” and as SEGA’s Communications Coordinator, all communication between the girls and their sponsors goes through Rhona. She ensures that all student bios are prepared so that they can be matched with a Nurturing Minds sponsor or friend and she helps the students edit their letters.
Another one of Rhona’s responsibilities is to plan and coordinate the logistics for all visitors to the campus. She works closely with SEGA’s Hospitality & Cultural Tourism Program Coordinator to make sure visitors have a meaningful, memorable visit, guided by student ambassadors. Unfortunately SEGA hasn’t had any visitors this past year due to COVID-19, but Rhona looks forward to welcoming visitors back to campus in 2022.
She says, “Working closely with visitors has made me realize how we are all part of one world, no matter where we are from. I always remind the students how lucky they are to have so many people from around the world who support their education.”
Rhona is from Dar es Salaam and began working at SEGA in January 2018. Previously, she was a Youth Development Officer at Raleigh International based in Morogoro. It is a youth-driven organization that works globally to promote young people’s roles in decision-making and civil society, creating meaningful youth employment and enterprise, ensuring the right to safe water and sanitation, along with other high priority goals.
Rhona had never worked at a school before so she says her biggest challenge at the beginning was how she would adapt to the new environment, responsibilities and people. She says the challenges quickly dissolved because “the beautiful smiles make me so happy.”
As to what gives her the most joy working at SEGA, Rhona states, “The students! Seeing them from the first time they arrive at SEGA until they graduate gives me so much pleasure. Their transformation upon graduation is so positive!”
As hard-working as she is, Rhona makes time for some relaxation, too. Saying she isn’t much of a reader, she most enjoys watching movies. She has downloaded Netflix on her phone to make sure she doesn’t miss the latest movies. Recently she watched a series called La Casa de Paper and says she now is waiting eagerly for the next episode in August.
We are so grateful to have someone as passionate and hard-working as Rhona to support SEGA’s students and staff. Thank you, Rhona!
Student Sponsorship
Sponsoring a student at SEGA is a meaningful way to support our important work and connect with and follow the progress of one SEGA student. It gives you a first-hand experience of seeing how your contribution to the school is making a difference, offers a cultural exchange and helps girls improve their English. Committing to 4 years is a great and stable way for the girls to get to know their sponsors, and also for you to cheer them on throughout their time at SEGA.
