SEGA is the Solution: Evelyne’s Story

2023 marks the 15th Anniversary of Nurturing Minds and SEGA! One of the ways we are celebrating this important milestone is through a monthly blog series titled “SEGA is the Solution”.

Young girls are most heavily impacted by lack of education, poverty and climate change. A striking body of evidence demonstrates that organizations like Nurturing Minds and SEGA are the solution to break the cycle of poverty, create prosperity and combat climate change. Each month we will be spotlighting one of SEGA’s graduates so you can see the impact that SEGA’s holistic approach to education has had on their lives.

Evelyne, SEGA
Class of 2015

“My life is great now because I’m living the life I dreamt of while I was at SEGA.”

If it wasn’t for SEGA, would you be where you are right now?

Evelyne while at SEGA

Without SEGA, I couldn’t be where I am today because my family wouldn’t have been able to support me through my education.

Becoming a SEGA student set Evelyne on the path for success. She was one of the few students in her class who pursued the science track, and she excelled academically – receiving Division 2 on her Form 4 national exams in 2015.

What is your education and employment status?

I am a university gradute with a Bachelor’s in Medical Laboratory Sciences. I am employed as a Medical Laboratory Scientist at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center.

How did you think about becoming a Medical Laboratory Scientist? Where did that dream come from?

When I was at SEGA, I was dreaming of becoming a doctor. The headmistress at that time advised me to take the science track. As I continued with my education, many people were advising me to be a doctor, a nurse, or a pharmacist. When I explained to one of my university level teachers what I wanted to do, he advised me to take the Medical Laboratory Scientist program.

After graduating from SEGA, Evelyne enrolled in A Levels with support from SEGA’s Continuing Education Scholarship Program. She continued to perform well and received Division 1 (the highest score possible) on her Form 6 national exams. After A Levels, Evelyne attended Bugando Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences and graduated in 2021.

How was life before SEGA and how is life now?

Before SEGA I was selling vegetables so that I can get money to buy clothes and shoes, but now I am a university graduate.

Evelyne is eternally thankful for the opportunities she had while at SEGA and during her continuing education journey. The education she obtained from SEGA benefited not just her, but also her family and her community.

And now I am among the educated girls in the nation, but it is because of SEGA.
