SEGA Students Excel AGAIN with National Exam Results!
SEGA students continue to excel! The 2021 National Exam results (NECTA), were recently announced and they exceeded the previous year’s outstanding results! SEGA has an exam pass rate in recent years between 98%-100% and the SEGA students follow the Tanzanian national curriculum, and that requires students in Forms 2 and 4 taking national exams in order to advance to the next level. Scores are organized into four categories, with Division One being the one with the highest scores and Division Four the lowest scores.
Form 4 Results
22 out of 58 girls earned Division One. Compared to 2020, the percentage is 37.9% vs 27.3%.
In another analysis, as reported by SEGA’s Director, Laina John Mwandoloma, 2021 results included the first time a SEGA student scored A in at least seven subjects since the school opened. Seven subjects is the minimum number of subjects in determining a student’s division and, therefore, for the first time, one student was able to get A’s in all seven subjects. That is an amazing accomplishment!
SEGA’s Ranking
Compared to other Tanzanian schools, SEGA’s Form 4 students ranked 19 out of 201 in the region and 298 out of 4,141 nationwide. It stands within 7% of the best performing schools in the country! Form 2 results exceeded even those of Form 4.
Form 2 Results
84.6% of students earned Division One in the 2021 national results compared to 79.4% for 2020 results.
If a Form 2 student fails the exam, they have the option of repeating their year and re-taking the exam again the next year. If a student fails the exam a second time, they cannot advance to Form 3 as a normal school candidate, but may continue in a school which has a private candidate system. That is to say, the government system will not recognize them as students if they fail the second time. But there is an option for one to go to a school which accepts private candidates.
Only a limited number of private schools offer this option and SEGA currently is not one of them. With the private candidate system, the student can repeat as many times as possible.
But because the likelihood of academic success at higher levels is low, many students who fail the Form 2 exam choose not to pursue their secondary schooling further and explore other options like vocational training or entering the workforce at this point.
We are proud to say that over the past several years, no SEGA Form 2 student has failed their NECTA exams.
What’s Next for Form 4 Students?
All Tanzanian secondary schools, private and government, are split into two levels. SEGA is “O” level (Ordinary), offering Forms 1-4. “A” level (Advanced) is Forms 5-6 which is comparable to 12th and “13th” grades in the U.S. Passing national exams at the end of Form 4 is required to advance to “A” level.
Upon Level 4 graduation from “O” level, students have several options, the main one being to join Advanced Secondary (A-level/high school) to study subjects’ combinations based on their performance in those subjects at Form 4. Another option is to join tertiary colleges to study different certificate courses. Both pathways can lead to university. For those who have not achieved the marks to join colleges, they can go to vocational training centers.
