Empowering Graduates with Tools for Academic Success

SEGA students sit for their national exams in Form 4 - their final year at the school. The results of this exam help to determine if a student will continue her education after SEGA or begin a career. Most recently, 100% of SEGA students passed their national exams, in comparison to the 80% national average pass rate. In addition, 100% of SEGA graduates score well enough on their national exams to pursue higher education.

One of our most important goals at SEGA is to empower girls to give them the tools to pursue careers and dreams that otherwise would not be possible.

One way SEGA accomplishes this is through continuing education scholarships. Graduating students are able to apply for SEGA’s Continuing Education Scholarship Fund which is essential for them to attend the higher education opportunity for which they qualify. Another way SEGA is accomplishing this goal is by finding ways to provide our graduates with access to important educational tools.

This past year, when SEGA Counselors visited the graduating class of 2019 at their Universities, they reported that one of the greatest needs for the graduates has been access to computers and the internet, as many of their schools had only a few shared laptops to accommodate all of their students.

In our rapidly evolving and connected world, computers are often essential for academic success. Some of the many benefits a student receives when provided access to a laptop include the ability to take notes digitally, interact with peers and collaborate on projects, gain access to a broad range of academic research, and use word processing tools to complete their assignments.

The Counselors shared the feedback they collected with SEGA and the decision was made to purchase 15 Dell laptops for graduates attending University to use while they are continuing their education.

In November, SEGA invited the graduates to campus to receive their laptops and SEGA’s IT Department worked with each student to set up the computer and answer any questions they might have.

Pauline Rusisye, SEGA’s Education for Life Coordinator said “The laptops came as a huge surprise to the girls. They were honored to receive these wonderful tools for their education and (the laptops) will make their life at University easier.”

She continued, “For a student, access to a computer is as big of a need as a hoe is to a farmer. We thank everyone at Nurturing Minds for supporting SEGA’s graduates.

Thank you for helping to empower SEGA’s graduates with the tools they need to pursue their continuing education.
