Grassroots School Fundraisers Are Busy Making a Difference

Our school partners have been meeting every few weeks on Zoom to share ideas on how they can support the SEGA students during these unprecedented times.

COVID-19 has turned our world and our lives upside-down. Our students at SEGA are feeling these consequences particularly acutely. To help raise funds to support the students at SEGA, five of our partner high schools have been busy making a difference.

One silver lining of this time is that leaders of all these clubs have connected and are uniting their efforts. Together through their brainstorming and collective fundraising efforts, they are going to make a significant difference for our SEGA students!

Check out what our innovative teen supporters are doing to support our students during this unprecedented time!

Newton North High School - Newton, Massachusetts

  • Five girls from Newton North’s Teens for SEGA club are making beaded bracelets and selling them online. Check out their beautiful bracelets on Instagram at @segajewelry! Buy one for $4, two for $7 or 3 for $10!

  • Club members are also writing letters to SEGA students describing their lives in quarantine. These letters will be distributed to students at home. We hope the letters will help our students feel supported and connected during this particularly challenging time.

St. Andrew’s School - Middletown, Delaware

  • Students at St. Andrew’s School are raising money by selling a custom-designed t-shirt. They are also in the midst of arranging a half marathon fundraiser and creating jewelry prototypes to sell online!

Portsmouth High School - Portsmouth, New Hampshire

  • The club at Portsmouth has a robust pen-pal program and will be continuing to correspond with SEGA students. Reading and responding to these letters will engage SEGA students while they are at home and help them practice their English skills.

The Lawrenceville School - Lawrenceville, New Jersey

  • Club members at Lawrenceville had scheduled a fundraiser for mid-May and even though the event has been canceled, they have arranged for the event to be hosted virtually. They are busy arranging a number of performances and panel speakers. Students are also selling t-shirts and bracelets on their online school store.

Madison High School - Madison, Wisconsin

  • MEGA for SEGA is getting crafty! They have lots of home-made scrunchies, bracelets and face masks for sale as an online auction activity.

Do you have an idea for your own grassroots fundraiser? Don’t be shy, let us know by emailing info@nurturingmindsinafrica.org. Any form of support for the SEGA students is welcome and greatly appreciated!
