Career Workshops Prepare Students for Jobs after Graduation

The Next Step: Students Learn About Potential Career Paths

For Form Four students, the past several months have been filled with a number of inspiring Career Workshops in order to better prepare the girls for jobs and life after they graduate in December.

The Career Workshops program began in April with a visit from a number of Career Speakers from Dar-es-Salaam. Through interactive presentations the speakers focused on how to successfully apply for a job, create a curriculum vitae, ace an interview and overcome obstacles in the workplace – all incredibly helpful and important skills!

Students listen to speakers tell their stories about how they came to be successful in their professional field.

Since then, Form Four students have had the opportunity to learn about a variety of industries through meeting with role models and going on mini fieldtrips. Below are a few highlights:

  • Dr. Mwampambe from the Morogoro Municipal Hospital gave a presentation and spoke extensively about various medical careers in the health care industry. Many of the girls are interested in pursuing nursing so Dr. Mwampambe’s insight was very well received and much appreciated.
  • Diana Magesa, a famous Tanzanian fashion designer, visited the Sega Girls School campus and shared how she became successful in the design industry. Diana’s life story – growing up in a typical Tanzanian family and then becoming a world-recognized fashion designer – was very inspiring for all of the students, particularly those hoping to work in design or crafts. The highlight of the presentation was a mini-fashion show in which Diana asked a handful of the students to model some of her fabrics and clothes!
  • The Nashera Hotel, one of Morogoro’s nicest hotels, graciously hosted and educated Form Four students about the hospitality industry. The girls toured the hotel  and learned about jobs in the restaurant, reception and housekeeping divisions. It was a fun and educational experience for all involved!

Amina Kimba, the Sega Girls School’s career counselor, and volunteer, Peggy Folkes, deserve a huge shout-out and thanks for organizing the Career Workshop series – Asante sana!
