Mother/Daughter Team Starts Nurturing Minds Chapter in Madison, WI
Mother/daughter team Anne Pringle and Zoe Johnson recently started SEGA’s newest chapter in Madison, Wisconsin – MEGA (Madison Empowering Girls Advancement) for SEGA.
Zoe and Anne first heard of SEGA through their Newton community several years ago. For Anne, a biologist who grew up overseas who wants to stay connected with efforts in developing nations, and Zoe, a high school student who strongly believes in girls’ equality and education, getting involved with SEGA was a natural fit. While living in Newton, Anne and Zoe participated in the SEGA’s Northeast chapter and sponsored a SEGA student. Their passion for SEGA and empowering and educating girls followed them to Madison, Wisconsin after they moved last year. Together they founded MEGA for SEGA, a chapter emphasizing involvement for mothers and daughters.
The younger MEGA chapter members (the daughters) are hosting various fundraisers to raise enough money to sponsor a SEGA student for the year. They are doing this by having bake sales and pin sales at Madison West High School. They are also working with local restaurants and companies like Trader Joes to set up special fundraisers and raise awareness for SEGA. For example, at Trader Joes if a customer brings a reusable grocery bag, Trader Joes donates 10 cents to a local charity. Additionally, some local restaurants have promised to donate 10% of their proceeds to MEGA for SEGA on special fundraising nights.
As for the mothers in MEGA, many are scientists and researchers. Their goal is to leverage their relationships with laboratory vendors to obtain donations for SEGA’s science and laboratory needs.
For SEGA supporters who wish to be involved in raising awareness and funds for SEGA but may not live near an established chapter, Zoe and Anne suggest starting with a preliminary meeting that brings people together, spreads the word about SEGA and emphasizes good refreshments. Regardless of the size of the chapter, Nurturing Minds chapters have a way of bringing together passionate, caring people who believe in a good cause and enjoy each other’s company.
